How to find clarity by doing deep work around your why

November 1, 2017 in Leadership, Motivation

It’s amazing what one month of deep work can do for your business.

In September, I was completely lost. I had just launched my professional development consulting firm 2 months earlier and felt like I was already losing focus from what I initially set out to accomplish.

But today, after one-month of deep work around my WHY, I have extreme clarity about my vision and the contribution I want to make to the world.

I feel empowered, ready to take on whatever challenges I face because I know what it’s all for. I understand my cause. Something that is greater than me. More important than any personal goals, ambitions, or objectives.

This is the power of deep work.

As Cal Newport describes in his book “clarity about what matters provides clarity about what doesn’t”. And it’s only by eliminating distractions and outside influence that you can explore what it really means.

Here are 3 questions I asked myself during my one-month “deep work” session…

1) Will this bring me closer to my ultimate goals?

Not just my business goals, but also all of my personal goals. Because my work should allow me to check-off objectives I have in life. Places I want to go. People I want to meet

Experiences I want to have. What did I want to accomplish in my life?

Evaluating how my business was bringing me closer to my goals is a huge motivation factor.

2) Will this help me become the person I want to be?

Who do I want to be personally? Professionally? What skills do I want to have?

How was my health? Mentally? Physically?

I have an idea of who I am going to be… I’m a speaker. I’m a writer of books. I’m someone who makes a measurable and important impact on the world.

But I needed to understand how my business, my job… you know the thing I spend 8 to 12 hours a day doing? ….was bringing me closer to who I want to become in life.

3) Will this support my greater contribution to the world?

If you’re always trying to make yourself happy, you will never be happy. You need to feel like you’re contributing to something BIGGER than YOURSELF. You need to make the world a better place in some way, shape or form.

Today, I’m taking a step towards building my greatest business ever. Something that will create MASSIVE SOCIAL IMPACT and empower leaders who want to do the same.

I’m on a mission to make the world a better place. And I have a vision for the future so vivid that nothing will stop me… it’s just too damn important.

And all of this came from one-month of deep work around…

  1. My Goals
  2. Who I want to be
  3. What I want to contribute to the world

3 Pillars I use as a compass when making any decisions.
